After we sent our dossier to China in March 2005 to adopt Olivia, I decided we would need to raise some more cash for adoption expenses. I found two cute ladybug fabrics and created some dresses, and a single page website. I posted it to two of my adoption internet forums. Ten orders came in the first weekend. So I bought more ladybug fabric, and added an Asian print. Orders came fast and furiously. And I didn’t even have a model! I didn’t get much sleep the summer of 2005, and despite having hand surgery, I created 250 dresses that first year. We traveled to China in April 2006 to adopt Olivia and I took a sabbatical from sewing. After adjusting to life with a toddler (and teenagers, but that is another story), I set up the machines again and discovered the fun of shopping for fabric and dressing my daughter in classic clothes. Olivia learned very quickly to pose and smile for my camera. In April 2007, another dossier went to China to adopt a little sister for Olivia, lovingly called by the teenagers “China 2” and Fly Away Home Clothing went into overdrive. I stocked up on Diet Coke, ladybugs, and Michael Miller fabric. I redesigned the website and moved my operation to the basement, where the thread on the floor won’t be noticeable when playgroup is held at our house. It’s just little old me making all these dresses, and I make them to order. Sometimes I get behind. OK, so usually I am behind….Currently please plan on three weeks to receive your order. Always check for new items and refresh the pages because I am constantly updating the site as availability of fabrics changes. Don’t forget to check the sale page! I’m not sure how long I can keep doing this...my hands aren’t in good shape—carpal tunnel, arthritis, an old torn ligament that’s messing around with some bones. Both hands go numb everynight. Finally in August 2009, we received our referral for our second ladybug from China who will will be naming Natalie Carol. We hope for travel in November and I’ll take a sewing sabbatical for about six months. I usually have more ideas than time to make them, alas. Take a look at my friend Jolene’s store, China Patterns 2005 for more Asian and ladybug outfits —Jennifer |

My clothing is custom made, and I ship your order within three weeks of purchase! Generally you can order your child’s regular size, but several of my dresses run a little large. You can always send your child’s measurements to ensure a great fit. I use 100% cotton fabric and tees made in the USA. I believe in quality boutique fashions at affordable prices. If your child is in-between sizes—no problem! Just send me her measurements. With the Capri or jeans sets, you can also order different sizes for the top and bottom. |
